Frequent Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do I know if a speech evaluation versus a language evaluation is needed?

Speech evaluations are recommended when the individual is difficult to understand, has certain sounds that are in error, or produces intelligible speech but has noticeable distortions. Language evaluations are recommended when the individual demonstrates any, or a combination, of the following: difficulty understanding and answering questions, frequently asks for clarification, has a limited vocabulary, has difficulty maintaining topic of conversation, has difficulty executing appropriate social interactions, or does not seem to understand non-literal language.  If you are questioning the need for speech-language therapy, an evaluation is highly recommended. Learn more with the the evaluation needs indicators.

My child receives speech therapy at school, but I'd like for him to receive more services. Can I seek extra therapy?

Yes, absolutely! Many schools are only able to offer group sessions with as many as to 3-5 children per group which doesn't always allow the the amount of individualized attention the child needs. In addition, school schedules, time constraints, meetings, etc., all affect school therapy schedules. Private speech therapy is an excellent route to consider if you are seeking individualized treatment, an increase in service provision, and additional expertise to help your child gain and generalize skills across a variety of settings.

How do I pay for speech therapy services?

Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO Plans and private pay are accepted. A superbill can be provided if you carry another type of insurance and would like reimbursement from that company. You will have to call your insurance company to find out your plan's benefits and what the insurance company requires in order to cover speech therapy (e.g., letter of medical necessity, meet deductible, etc.). Co-pays are due at the time of service.

What is the cost of speech therapy?

Please send an inquiry or call directly to discuss the cost of evaluation and therapy sessions. Blue Cross Blue Shield Plans and private pay are accepted.

How long are speech therapy sessions?

This depends on the age and attention span of the the individual.  Sessions likely will last no longer than one hour. Most sessions are 45 minutes, but again, duration is dependent on what is best for the client's needs. Frequency of therapy can vary, based on need.

I have insurance, but not Blue Cross Blue Shield. What can I do?

A superbill can be composed for you to submit to insurance. Some insurances will accept this superbill and will reimburse you for what you have paid out of pocket.

Will you travel to my home for therapy?

Yes. Services can be provided in the home. Services are currently able to be provided in Chicago, Berwyn, Oak Park, River Forest, Elmwood Park, and Forest Park. If you live in another area, please contact us and a determination as to whether a therapist can travel to you will be made.

Can my child attend therapy with another child?

Group therapy is available. Your child could be placed with another individual that has similar needs. Group therapy is a great way to build relationships and confidence while working on goals.

What does a typical session look like?

Therapy sessions are tailored to the needs of each individual. Goals are written to target the areas of speech, language, or pragmatics to facilitate age appropriate skills. The way therapy is structured depends on the age, interests of the individual, and speech-language needs. While play based therapy may be appropriate for a younger client, a more structured, academic approach might be better for an older client. Therapy is typically 1:1 at the office. Sessions are 45 minutes (unless unable to tolerate that duration). While there is no waiting room, there are chairs in the hallway, should parents or caregiver want to wait there for their child.
